Portable metal detectors can be divided into several types on the basis of their
purpose and technical characteristics.
Most small-sized ones are the so-called compact metal detectors.
They are sometimes also called pocket metal detectors because they fit
easily into a coat pocket, and some of them - even in trouser pocket.
Compact metal detectors are designed to detect metallic objects at a relatively small
distance, usually not more than 10 cm. This distance depends on
the size of the metal object, but even for a very large
object, like a car, this distance does not exceed 0.5 - 1 m. Sure,
ground metal detectors can detect metal at several times larger
distances, but also compact metal detectors have their own
advantages. In addition to small size and
weight it's usually a low power consumption, as well as the ability to
detect small metal objects which are inaccessible for ground metal detectors.
There is a wide range of models of compact metal detectors in the world.
They are presented in the model lineups
of many leading companies. The most common type of compact metal detectors perhaps are pinpointers.
Another, also quite widespread variety, are compact metal detectors in a
rectangular case. There are also more exotic species such as needle detectors.
Each of these types has both advantages
and disadvantages, and takes its own sphere of application. The main advantage of
needle detectors is low price, pinpointers
allow to explore the narrow cavities
and crevices, and rectangular shaped metal detectors have the largest detection distance.
